Bible Study Service in Surabaya, September 08, 2014 (Monday Evening)

Speaker: Deacon Youpri Ardiantoro

Peace and grace in the love of our Lord Jesus Christ.

We will learn about Mark 5: 1-20.
It is about the ministry of Jesus who faced a demon-possessed man in Gadarenes.

It can happen to all people, bot children and old people.

We will learn about the spiritual meaning.

IT HAPPENS TO CHILDREN
Matthew 17: 15, 19
17:15 "Lord, have mercy on my son, for he is an epileptic and suffers severely; for he often falls into the fire and often into the water.
17:19 Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and said, "Why could we not cast it out?"

Verse 15 = the epilepsy happens because of being demon-possessed.

There are two signs of children who are demon-possessed spiritually as follows.

  1. Often falling into the fire.
    The fire means as follows.

    • The fire of the world.
The sign is unfaithfulness in the service and ministry and fervency in spirit doing activity in the world.

    • The fire of sin up to the peak.
There are two kinds of sin as follows.

      1. Uncleanness sins.
        Genesis 19: 4, 11
19:4 Now before they lay down, the men of the city, the men of Sodom, both old and young, all the people from every quarter, surrounded the house.
19:11 And they struck the men who were at the doorway of the house with blindness,
both small and great, so that they became weary trying to find the door.

It is about Sodom and Gomorrah.
'both old and young' and 'both small and great' = uncleanness sin happens, starting from children.

      2. Evil sin.
        Acts 9: 1
9:1 Then Saul, still breathing threats and murder against the disciples of the Lord, went to the high priest,

It means the murder or hatred.
The children who are in the influence of evil spirit have the fire of hatred.

        Mark 13: 12
13:12 "Now brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child; and children will rise up against parents and cause them to be put to death.

Who is hated by the child who is demon-possessed? The siblings and parents who love him.

  2. Falling into the water.
The water refers to the freshness or the stream of the world.
    It includes the pornography movie.

Consequently,
there is suffering. He himself suffers and so do the others around him, including the parents and siblings.

The solutions are as follows.

  1. Meeting Jesus through the Word.
There is no help if we have no Jesus or the Word. The disciples could not cast out the demon because their efforts were without the Word.

  2. The parents must worship God much more.
The parents also mean the pastor.
As a result, God stretches His hand through the Word and there is a healing.

IT HAPPENS TO ADULT OR OLD PEOPLE
There are two kinds of old people as follows.

  1. Mothers or wives.
    Luke 13: 11
13:11 And behold, there was a woman who had a spirit of infirmity eighteen years, and was bent over and could in no way raise herself up.

There are two signs of mothers or wives who are demon-possessed as follows.

    • Being bent over spiritually.
It means anxiety (Proverbs 12: 25)
They often worry about food, drink, clothes, and future life (Matthew 6: 1-34).

The consequence is one cannot prioritize God or seek first the kingdom of God.

      Proverbs 25: 26
25:26 A righteous man who falters before the wicked Is like a murky spring and a polluted well.

Beware! Telling our anxiety to the wicked means being a murky spring and polluted well.

    • Being bent over for eighteen years.
      18 = 666
It means that the body, soul, and spirit keep on being human in blood and flesh, without any life renewal.

      2 Timothy 3: 1-5
3:1 But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come:
      3:2 For men will be
      lovers of themselves(1), lovers of money(2), boasters(3), proud(4), blasphemers(5), disobedient to parents(6), unthankful(7), unholy(8),
      3:3
      unloving(9), unforgiving(10), slanderers(11), without self-control(12), brutal(13), despisers of good(14),
      3:4
traitors(15), headstrong(16), haughty(17), lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God(18),
      3:5
having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away!

      Who are they?
'having a form of godliness' = the servants or sons of God who serve and minister to God often do not experience the life renewal, but they are under the influence of evil spirit.

    • Not standing fast = not having a right standpoint.
It means that they are easily tossed to and fro and under the influence of evil spirit.

We must stand fast to the true teaching Word, namely the Word that is written in the Bible, whose verse explains other verses.
Eve was tossed to and fro because of the voice of the serpent, so she could not stand fast, and then she fell.

    The solutions are as follows.

    • Keeping on dwelling in the temple until we can meet Jesus. It means not leaving the house of God until we can meet the true teaching Word.

The contents of the true teaching Word are as follows.

      1. Convincing or showing us the false things in our life.
      2. Rebuking.
      3. Exhorting.

    • After we receive the true teaching Word, God calls us. It means that the Word points to us to show us our mistake and rebuke us. It is an important time.

Receiving the calling, there will be a healing because the hand of God is stretched to solve our problems.
Not receiving the calling or not willingly being pointed by the Word, but blaming others, one will keep on suffering and being destroyed forever together with the evil spirits.

  2. Fathers , husbands, or pastors.
    The signs are as follows.

    • They prefer to be in the tombs than at home.
      Mark 5: 2
5:2 And when He had come out of the boat, immediately there met Him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit,

The tomb refers to the place where there is the lengthening of the hand of Satan or the place where there are sins up to the peak. They are in the influence of evil spirits.

    • No one could bind him or not being shepherded.
      Mark 5: 3-4
5:3 who had his dwelling among the tombs; and no one could bind him, not even with chains,
      5:4 because he had often
been bound with shackles and chains. And the chains had been pulled apart by him, and the shackles broken in pieces; neither could anyone tame him.

Our flesh is indeed repressed in the shepherding.
Not being shepherded or bound by the Word, one will not obey the rule.

    • Wandering in the mountains and in the tombs.
      Mark 5: 5
5:5 And always, night and day, he was in the mountains and in the tombs, crying out and cutting himself with stones.

It means unfaithfulness. Sometimes he is in the mountains or shepherding pen, but sometimes he is in the tombs or the place where there are many sins.

It is as the strategy of Pharaoh. He did not allow the house of Israel to serve God when they were going out of Egypt. Finally, God punished Egypt with ten plagues. Afterwards, Pharaoh allowed them to serve God, but only in Egypt. It means the atmosphere of the service and ministry are mixed like the condition of the man who was in the mountains and in the tombs.

The consequences of not being shepherded and faithful are as follows.

    • Crying out = one likes to hurt others by his words.
    • Violence in the household.
      Mark 5: 5
5:5 And always, night and day, he was in the mountains and in the tombs, crying out and cutting himself with stones.

'cutting himself with stones' = the husband or head beats the wife or body.

Consequently, he is separated from the wife, children, siblings, and society.

Moreover, he will be separated from Jesus.
It means that he is with demons and destroyed forever.

The solution for the husbands or fathers who are demon-possessed is meeting with Jesus or the Word, meaning hearing the Word until they can understand and believe in it. The healing will happen.
Do not argue the Word because there is power to cast out evil spirits and heal us in it.

The signs of being healed or set free from the evil spirits are as follows.

Mark 5: 15
5:15 Then they came to Jesus, and saw the one who had been demon-possessed and had the legion, sitting and clothed and in his right mind. And they were afraid.

  1. Wearing clothes.
Formely, the demon-possessed person was naked.
In the beginning of the creation of human, the clothes were made to cover the nakedness. The naked human was ashamed.
Wearing the clothes means being ashamed because of sinning.

  2. Sitting = being shepherded well = being bound to the True Vine.
  3. Being in the right mind = being calm and able to control our self.
Controlling our self means controlling our tongue.
    James 3: 3-5
3:3 Indeed, we put bits in horses' mouths that they may obey us, and we turn their whole body.
3:4 Look also at ships: although they are so large and are driven by fierce winds, they are turned by a very small rudder wherever the pilot desires.
    3:5 Even so
the tongue is a little member and boasts great things. See how great a forest a little fire kindles!

    It means as follows.

    • Saying right words.
We say "yes" if yes and "no" if no.
One is not in his right mnd when he says the right is wrong and vice versa, especially about the teachings.

    • We do not stumble in words = perfection.
      James 3: 2
3:2 For we all stumble in many things. If anyone does not stumble in word, he is a perfect man, able also to bridle the whole body.

The results of wearing clothes, sitting, and in right mind are as follows.
Matthew 12: 43-45
12:43 "When an unclean spirit goes out of a man, he goes through dry places, seeking rest, and finds none.
12:44 "Then he says, 'I will return to my house from which I came.' And when he comes, he finds it empty,
swept, and put in order.
12:45 "Then he goes and takes with him seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter and dwell there; and the last state of that man is worse than the first. So shall it also be with this wicked generation."

  1. 'swept' = our life begins to be sanctified.
'put in order' = all things begin to be arranged by God. Our life becomes in order.

  2. Our life is used by God to become the witness or the light.
    Mark 5: 19-20
5:19 However, Jesus did not permit him, but said to him, "Go home to your friends, and tell them what great things the Lord has done for you, and how He has had compassion on you."
5:20 And he departed and began to proclaim in Decapolis all that Jesus had done for him; and all marveled.

It means that we become the light in our marriage or household, before all peole, up to the light of the world or perfect life.

Mark 5: 9
5:9 Then He asked him, "What is your name?" And he answered, saying, "My name is Legion; for we are many."

We must be careful. A man can be ruled over by Legion. How can it be?
In Matthew 12: 43-45, unclean spirit walks about after he goes out of a man. When the spirit finds the life is as a house that has been swept, but empty, he will return and take with him seven other spirits more wicked than himself and they enter and dwell there; and the last state of that man is worse than the first.

Hebrews 3: 6
3:6 but Christ as a Son over His own house, whose house we are if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm to the end.

Who must be the content or head of our life?
Jesus must be the head of the house of our life, so that we are not empty.

Jesus shows Himself in three forms as follows.

  1. The Word.
    John 1: 1, 14
1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
    1:14 And
the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.

    'the Word became flesh'= Jesus.

We must be filled with the Word, so that we are not empty.
The proof is evident when we hold fast to the faith or the true teaching Word. It refers to the perseverance in doing Bible Study Service with Holy Communion.
Holding fast to the Word, it will not be so difficult to be filled with the Word, and we do not add or take away the Word of God.

    1 Kings 13: 8-9
13:8 But the man of God said to the king, "If you were to give me half your house, I would not go in with you; nor would I eat bread nor drink water in this place.
13:9 "For so it was commanded me by the word of the LORD, saying, 'You shall not eat bread, nor drink water, nor return by the same way you came.'"

= about old prophet and young one.

Verse 9 refers to the Word spoken directly by God.
The young prophet held fast to the command of God to face the king, namely not eating bread or drinking water. As a result, he was successful.

    1 Kings 13: 11, 18
13:11 Now an old prophet dwelt in Bethel, and his sons came and told him all the works that the man of God had done that day in Bethel; they also told their father the words which he had spoken to the king.
13:18 He said to him, "I too am a prophet as you are, and an angel spoke to me by the word of the LORD, saying, 'Bring him back with you to your house, that he may eat bread and drink water.'"(
    He was lying to him.)

Nevertheless, when the old prophet lied to him, he obeyed him. Finally, he was killed by a lion. Let us hold fast to the true teaching Word. Do not be moved.

    1 Kings 13: 23-24
13:23 So it was, after he had eaten bread and after he had drunk, that he saddled the donkey for him, the prophet whom he had brought back.
    13:24 When he was gone,
a lion met him on the road and killed him. And his corpse was thrown on the road, and the donkey stood by it. The lion also stood by the corpse.

Not holding fast to the true teaching Word, one will bear the risk by himself.

  2. Holy Spirit.
    Matthew 1: 20
1:20 But while he thought about these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, "Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take to you Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit.

We are filled by Holy Spirit by perseverance in doing General Service.
As a result, we can be obedient. We only say "Abba, Father" although we have to face the condition of Abraham who was commanded to slaughter Isaac.

Satan cannot enter us if we have the Word and Holy Spirit, because there is Jesus as our Head.

  3. The love of God.
    John 3: 16
3:16 "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.

The love of God must fill our life through perseverance in doing Prayer Service.

The proof of being filled with the love of God is ability to love Him more than anything and others as ourselves.
Loving others as ourselves means that we do something we want others to do to us first.
If a husband wants that his wife says sweetly to him, he must first say sweetly to her. If a supervisor wants to be appreciated by the inferiors, he must appreciate them first.

The results of being filled with the love of God are as follows.
    Mark 12: 33-34
12:33 "And to love Him with all the heart, with all the understanding, with all the soul, and with all the strength, and to love one's neighbor as oneself, is more than all the whole burnt offerings and sacrifices."
12:34 Now when Jesus saw that he answered wisely, He said to him, "
You are not far from the kingdom of God." But after that no one dared question Him.

    • 'You are not far from the kingdom of God' = we have felt the atmosphere of heavenly kingdom or paradise from now on.

If we can feel the peace and love or we love others, soon we will enter the kingdom of heaven.

    • 'no one dared question Him' = there is no more question in our life.
Although there are many questions in our life, such as about marriage, future life, job, ministry, and marriage partner, there will be no more question if our life is filled with the love of God. The love of God answers all things and He is able to make all things good in our life.

God blesses you.
